Maddie sat outside of the Hufflepuff common room, leaning against the wall. She had potions in a few minutes, but there was no need to rush. It didn't take too long to get from where she was sitting to the potions classroom, after all. Instead, she was planning on helping new Hufflepuffs out some. Older Hufflepuffs tended to do this in shifts, and it just so happened that Maddie had some free time. You see, the Set was unique in two ways: no outsider had ever stepped foot within it, and it had a security mechanism that involved a lot of vinegar. Therefore, it was crucial for new students to learn quickly. Luckily, the password and entrance weren't too hard to remember, but new Hufflepuffs still had to be taught.
It wasn't too much trouble for any Hufflepuff to help out, so Maddie sat in the hallway leading to the kitchens, just far removed enough from the actual entrance to the common room that hopefully no one would notice. She checked her watch- and older thing, but actually rather nice. She had gotten it from a friend when she was in third year. She still had ten minutes to get to class. She'd be on time. Maybe, if she had time after lunch and she wasn't given too much homework, she could even go convince Hagrid to let her help take care of the Thestrals. She'd never seen someone die, but she had learned at home how to take care of the invisible creature.
Her classes had been going about as expected. Despite the Professor's and her own misgivings, the Ministry had told her to take NEWT level transfiguration. "You'll do fine," they said dismissively, "you'll get bonus points for the animagus transformation." She had only barely gotten into NEWT potions, a complete miracle considering the high standards of the class. NEWT care of magical creatures was, of course, her strong suit, and she added NEWT charms as well, something she was okay at, but not great. She hadn't managed to scrape up the grades for any other NEWT level courses, which was okay. Charms, potions, and care were really all she needed, anyway.
Checking her watch, she sighed and stood up. It really wouldn't do to be late for a class the Professor had almost refused to let her in to, and even though she still had seven minutes, the early bird catches the worm upon occasion.
